TMDA Requirements

TMDA is designed to run on the server which receives your incoming mail, not on your desktop workstation. Thus, you must be able to install software on your mail server in order to use TMDA. If you aren't able to do this, you might ask your ISP to do so on your behalf, or sign up with one of the providers that offers TMDA as a service to its customers.

TMDA currently runs only on UNIX-based systems, such as GNU/Linux, Solaris, *BSD, etc. It also works on Mac OS X, but not earlier versions of Mac OS. TMDA does not currently run on Microsoft Windows.

If TMDA will not work in your environment, we maintain a list of TMDA-like systems.

If you decide to give TMDA a whirl, make sure you have the necessary prerequisite software installed first.

  1. The Python programming language. Versions 2.3 and higher are supported, including the latest 2.4.x point release as well as version 2.5. Many UNIX/Linux distributions now come with Python pre-installed. To check whether it is and what version you have installed, try typing python -V and/or python2 -V at your shell's command line.

  2. An SMTP server (a.k.a. mail transport agent or MTA) for mail reception. Currently supported MTAs include qmail, Postfix, Exim, Courier, and Sendmail.

  3. The procmail or maildrop local delivery agent is required, if and only if you are running Sendmail as your MTA.
